The picturesque town of Armidale with its fine old buildings and vigorous cultural life is well worth a visit at any time of the year. But, for city dwellers keen to get amongst nature, Armidale is the place to be.

Surrounded with some of the best national parks, unspoiled wilderness and world heritage areas anywhere in Australia, access can be no more than two hours away. The gateway, mostly along good sealed roads offers a choice of over 20 different national park visitor areas. Clearly, one of the great things about the New England Tablelands is that a short drive in almost any direction from the city centre can see you driving through gently rolling hills that quite suddenly come across gorges of prodigious depth and size or spectacular waterfalls.

Whilst the diversity is enormous, each visitor area offers outstanding scenery and recreation activities to suit everyone's taste - sightseeing, picnics, easy walks, bush walks, camping, 4WD escapes, historical sites, fishing, canoeing, overnight hikes and more. Virtually anything you want from the great outdoors, you can get it in the New England area.
