Disability Action Plan

Last modified: August 27, 2009 - 2:28 PM

Armidale Dumaresq Council's Disability Action Plan is designed to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1992.

While Action Plans are not a mandatory requirement of the DDA, the Act states that an organisation may develop an Action Plan to eliminate discriminatory practices. This Plan may be lodged with the Commonwealth Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC). This will highlight Armidale Dumaresq Council's commitment to the implementation of its Disability Action Plan. The Plan has been developed to address issues relating to access for people with disabilities, and follows on from previous work in this area such as Development Control Plan "J" - Design for Access and Mobility. The Disability Action Plan has been developed: * To eliminate discrimination. * To reduce the likelihood of complaints being lodged with HREOC. * As sound business practice because the implementation of such Plans improves Council's performance in fulfilling its Community Services responsibilities to people with disabilities and their families, who constitute a significant proportion of the Community.
