Conference on Shared Resources & Services vs Amalgamations - The working alternative for local government reform in NSW was held on 21,22 August 2006 in Armidale.

The Strategic Alliance is a real alternative to forced amalgamations of local government organisations in NSW. Armidale Dumaresq, Walcha, Guyra Shire and Uralla Shire Councils have recently combined to form a regional strategic alliance, the New England Strategic Alliance of Councils, based on the Shared Services Model.

A Conference was held on 21 & 22 August 2006 in Armidale, NSW to present the protocols, business case reviews and findings of the new Model of Cooperative and Shared Services.

Conference themes and program outline

  • The Shared Services Model in the New England region
  • How the Model was implemented
  • Demonstrated efficiencies/savings
  • Models for improving effectiveness of operations
  • Changing culture to focus on performance
  • Continuous improvement programs within the model
  • Retention of local representation and local decision making in the new model
  • Benchmarking for provable performance measurement
  • Implementing a similar model with your area councils
