Forsyths review report on NESAC

Last modified: August 27, 2009 - 2:49 PM

An independent report commissioned by the New England Strategic Alliance of Councils was tabled for consideration at today’s New England Strategic Alliance Advisory Committee in Armidale.

The report was specifically aimed at identifying feasible and sustainable structural reform for the Alliance.  The options ranged from re-establishment of autonomous councils, enhancing the current cooperative alliance model, creating business units, creating a separate service entity, and amalgamation.

Mayor Hans Hietbrink Chair of NESAC Advisory Committee indicated that their were robust discussions on the options proposed.

Armidale Dumaresq Council recommended that consideration be given to a community engagement program in progressing options such as amalgamation and a separate service entity.  Councillor Hietbrink stated that the Committee ultimately resolved to continue discussions on a way forward.

Uralla Council tabled a response to the report but considered that an amalgamation or shared service entity as recommended in the report was thought not to serve the best interests of their community.  Uralla Shire will be holding an extraordinary meeting today to determine their future in the Alliance.

Guyra Shire Council has not yet resolved on a structure to move forward, but in principle supported any proposal that generated structural efficiency and sustainability but retained their Council autonomy.

New England Weeds Authority, present at the meeting, indicated a willingness to remain in as an independent County Council.
