Information day for Local Government election candidates
The NSW Local Government Elections will be held on Saturday, 13 September 2008 and to help those community members thinking of throwing their hat in the ring, an information day for potential candidates will be held on Saturday, May 17.
The Electoral Commission of NSW will be hosting the Candidate Information Session, which will be held in the Armidale Town Hall from 10.30am to noon.
“The information session is an important source of information, particularly for anyone who is thinking about nominating as a candidate for the September elections, or who are nominating for the first time,” Armidale Dumaresq Council’s General Manager Shane Burns said.
The information session will cover a range of topics including the role and responsibilities of the NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC), the role of Returning Officers, the election timetable, nominations and groupings for candidates, how-to-vote material and election advertising, ballot papers and formality, vote counting arrangements, scrutineers, offences, postal and pre-poll voting and results notification.
Information will be provided during a PowerPoint presentation and NSWEC staff will be available to answer any questions from attendees.
Following the NSWEC Information Session, the Local Government and Shires Association will be conducting a pre-election seminar sponsored by Armidale Dumaresq Council from 1pm to 4pm, also in the Town Hall. The seminar will provide an introduction to Local Government and information on the diversity of function provided by local Councils.
To help potential candidates, the Council is making available copies of the Department of Local Government’s ‘Becoming a Councillor’ publication. The booklet provides an overview of Local Government and outlines what a councillor’s role is, what support is available to councillors and how to nominate as a candidate for the Local Government elections.
‘Becoming a Councillor’ is available at the Council’s Administration Building in Rusden Street, on the Council website www.armidale.nsw.gov.au or at www.dlg.nsw.gov.au. Copies are available at Council’s Administrative Building.
For further information on either information session contact Shane Burns on 6770 3822.
