Woodsmoke and Health

Last modified: August 27, 2009 - 2:25 PM

Smoke from woodheaters is a major source of air pollution. It's bad for our environment and it's bad for our health.

Woodsmoke pollution can affect anyone. However, there are people in the community who are more susceptible, including infants and very young children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health problems like asthma and heart and lung disease. NSW Health advises that exposure to woodsmoke pollution can contribute to:

* Itchy or burning eyes and throat irritations * Breathing difficulties and respiratory illnesses like bronchitis * Headaches, fatigue or chest pain, and * Decreased lung function in children. There is also evidence that smoke pollution can aggravate existing heart and lung problems like angina, emphysema and asthma. Further information can be obtained from the NSW Health website at the following location: NSW Health - Woodsmoke
