Sewerage

Last modified: September 18, 2007 - 9:58 AM

Armidale is mostly serviced by a gravity Sewage Drainage System. There is only one small submersible sewer Pumping Station in the extreme South Eastern area of the city.

The Sewage System was first constructed in the late 1930's when the population was only 6,000. Today the population served is about 21,000 and there are 8,000 connections to the sewer.

There are approximately 260km of normal sewer reticulation pipes which are 150mm diameter as well as about 30km of trunk and collector mains which vary from 300mm diameter to 1,050mm diameter.

Sewage drains to Armidale Waste Water Treatment Works located near the confluence of Dumaresq Creek and Commissioners Water, 3km East of the city.

The Waste Water Treatment Works is a conventional Biological Trickling Filter Plant and preliminary screening, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Biological Treatment.

There are no chemicals used in the treatment process, tertiary dinfection being by natural oxidation and ultra violet light exposure in ponds with a minimum 21 days and up to 28 days detention period.

The plant is licensed by the NSW Environmental Protection Authority to discharge treated effluent into Commissioners Waters, however, with the implementation of Load Based Licensing under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act, action is in hand to achieve 100% reuse of sewage effluent and biosolids to agricultural activities.

The maximum treatment capacity of the Plant is for an inflow of 300L/sec and the average annual discharge from the oxidation ponds during the last five years has been approximately 1,750ML.

Council has adopted a Liquid Trade Waste Policy and Commercial Discharge are required to enter into an Agreement with Council to discharge Liquid Trade Waste to Sewer.

How much does it cost for this service?

The Residential fixed Charge for Sewer Services is $210 per year. Other Charges are set out in Council's Management Plan.
