Armidale is renown for its leafy tree-lined streets, parks and creeklands, yet little thought is often given to the people responsible for planting those trees.
In a major undertaking to rehabilitate the section of Dumaresq Creek that winds its way through the Armidale City Centre, the Urban Rivercare Group and Armidale Dumaresq Lions Club have been holding a series of tree planting days, with the next day being held on Sunday, May 18.“This is our last tree planting day being held before the Spring,” Armidale Dumaresq Council’s Deputy Mayor and Rivercare Group spokesperson, Cr Bruce Whan, said.
“We have planted more than 400 trees along Dumaresq Creek near Douglas Street, but we still have an additional 300 trees to plant before the onset of winter.”
The Urban Rivercare Group is a vibrant and growing organisation and anyone interest in joining the mailing list and becoming involved in cleaning up the creek can contact Cr Whan by email at whan11@bigpond.com.
The tree planting day on Sunday, May 18 will begin at 9am. Participants are advised to dress appropriately with covered shoes, gloves and hat. A barbecue lunch will be provided for participants by the Armidale Dumaresq Lions Club.
