Neighbours rights to have their say lost under the new State Government pro-Developer Laws

The ability for Armidale residents to have their say in local development decisions may soon be lost under proposed State Government planning reforms.

Under the proposed new laws, private companies will be given the power to approve residential developments, with the current Local Government requirement of notification to neighbours being removed. Neighbours would also lose access to the ability of being able to support or object to residential developments.

Armidale Dumaresq Council Mayor Peter Ducat said the Council had joined forces with councils around the State to fight the proposed pro-developer laws through a campaign called “KeepItLocal”.

“The proposed State Government changes are a radical overhaul of local planning laws that result in important development controls being taken away from local communities,” Cr Ducat said. “Unlike the current situation, the first you will know about a development is when you see the bulldozers outside. Once you’ve lost your sunshine and your privacy, it is too late.”

Cr Ducat said this week a number of residents from Netherton Park Estate had attended the Council meeting, with one resident making a passionate plea against a proposed development application.

“The result was that the Council voted not to approve the proposed development application,” Cr Ducat said. “This ability to have your say in local development and planning decisions will be lost under the State Government’s proposed new laws.”

“It is vital that important planning decisions remain in the hands of the local community.”
