Dog owners encouraged to use dedicated off-leash areas
Pets can help break down social isolation, bring people together and encourage us to exercise which makes for a better quality of life and a friendlier, livelier Armidale. For this reason, Armidale is well served by several dog off-leash areas; that is, open space areas set aside for the use of responsible pet owners to exercise their pets.
Council’s Animal Shelter Manager, Phil Evans said there was a need to provide facilities for dog owners to enjoy our open spaces with their ‘best friend’.
“Creating dog off-leash areas for exercising and socialising dogs is particularly important in the city environment where people live on smaller blocks and have limited opportunities for their pets to enjoy free running exercise,” Mr Evans said. “This is important to reduce animal boredom which can reduce behavioural problems such as nuisance barking.”
Having dog off leash areas available to pet owners is also designed to prevent the use of other public open spaces by owners wanting to exercise their dogs off leash. Sporting ovals in particular are affected when owners use these facilities irresponsibly.
“Heavy penalties apply to people found using these areas for dog off leash exercise,” Mr Evans said. “Parks are signposted when they are restricted or no-go areas for dogs. Council’s Rangers can and do issue ‘on the spot’ fines to owners for dogs being exercised without being under effective control via a leash in public places including parks ovals and other public open spaces.”
Dog off-leash areas in Armidale are found at the following locations:
- Taylor Street (south) adjacent to Moran Oval;
- Creeklands, east of Taylor Street/Holmes Avenue to Centennial Close;
- Charleston Willows, Rockvale Road;
- Pedestrian walkway west from Niagara Street (behind Brogan Street) to UNE; and
- Shambrook Avenue
