Rebates available for sustainable living
Armidale Dumaresq Council is continuing its push to become a leader in environmental sustainability by encouraging residents to apply for rebates under the State Government’s $100 million Climate Change Fund Residential Rebate Program.
The Council recently was successful in securing a $55,000 Federal Government Climate Change grant to fund the New England Climate Change Risk Assessment and Adaptation Action Plan.
The State Government’s $100 million Residential Rebate Program is part of the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund and has been established to help people make their homes more water and energy efficient.
The Council’s Manager Environment and Health Euan Belson said the Council was currently examining a range of ways in which to apply for additional Government grant funding in order to address climate change and environmental sustainability issues.“While we are working at a Local Government level to address climate change issues, local residents can also play a part by ensuring their home is as environmentally sustainable as possible, they will also save cash on their running costs” Mr. Belson said. “These steps include replacing electric hot water systems with gas or solar systems, insulating your home to reduce heating requirements, installing rainwater tanks to reduce demand on the city’s water supply, there is even a scheme currently operating in Armidale offering free replacement of light bulbs and showerheads.To help residents meet the costs of such steps, the State Government is offering a range of rebates including:
· a rainwater tank rebate that provides up to $1500 for rainwater tanks connected to a home’s toilets and washing machine;
· a hot water system rebate up to $1200 to assist homeowners switch from electric to solar, heat pump or gas hot water systems; and
· a ceiling insulation rebate that provides half the cost of installing ceiling insulation in your home, up to a maximum of $300.
Hot water systems, insulation or rainwater tanks installed to comply with BASIX (the Building Sustainability Index) for new homes and major renovations are not eligible for the rebate. Many Armidale Dumaresq residents have already taken advantage of the rebate scheme, with 11 residents successfully receiving rebates on new hot water systems, 38 receiving rebates for water tanks and one resident receiving an insulation rebate. This has resulted in more than $30,000 being returned to local residents under the State Government’s rebate scheme.
