Plans for the fourth annual Sustainable Living Tour are well underway, with the popular event being held this year in conjunction with the Sustainable Living Expo (SLEX) in September.

The Tour is presented by the Armidale Waldorf School for Rudolf Steiner education in aid of the Boongaiai Preschool and will take place over two weekends on September 13 and 14 and 20 and 21.

Tour co-ordinator Robyn Newberry said the aim of the event, which will ‘open’ the SLEX, was to support, promote and encourage individual initiatives that work towards minimizing environmental impacts on our region.

“We have borrowed the motto ‘Think Globally, Act Locally’ and seek to empower and inspire individuals to work toward solutions which address climate change and global warming,” Ms Newberry said.

“Our goal is for our region to be recognised as a leader in sustainable practice and a place to experience a community where sustainable development has negated the impact on the environment and eco-systems which support it.”

The Tour will provide up to 16 open homes and sites which demonstrate sustainable principles in terms of building design, use of materials, generation of power and hot water, water cleansing and recycling and gardening/farming.

“This year’s tour will feature retro-fitted homes, along with houses and community premises built of mud brick, earth, tyres, straw bales as well as conventional materials,” Ms Newberry said.

The transferable Tour guide book, which facilitates access to the open properties for the occupants of one personal vehicle,  will be available for $50 from the Armidale Visitor Centre from August 2008 or by calling 1800 627 736. Alternatively, bookings can be made online at www.armidaletourism.com.au.
