Cycleways
Armidale was a forerunner in the provision of cycleways. The City's first cycleway of 3 kms was completed in two stages linking the Central Business District with the University of New England. The first stage of approximately half the total length and linking the Central Business District to Residential areas was completed in March 1980. The final stage to the University was completed in March 1981 and officially opened as the John Failes Cycleway in recognition of Dr John Failes' efforts in raising community support to fund the construction of cycleway. Stages of the Cycleway network have been added with a total of 10 kms of off road cycleways and 7 kms of on road cycleways criss-crossing the City. Recent extensions out into the rural areas of the City provide a popular recreational and commuter network.
