New footpath project connects Armidale's cultural precinct
Published on 20 July 2026
Armidale Regional Council is set to deliver a new pedestrian footpath along Kentucky Street, helping bridge the gap in the city's footpath network while improving accessibility and safety for residents and visitors accessing some of Armidale's most significant cultural and community facilities.
The project will see the construction of a continuous concrete footpath on the western side of Kentucky Street between Taylor Street and Dangar Street, creating a safer and more accessible link between nearby residential areas and destinations including the Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Keeping Place, the Museum of Education, New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), and the Armidale City Gymnastics Club.
As part of the works, Council will construct new kerb ramps, access pathways and retaining wall elements, undertake drainage improvements, install solar lighting, renew sections of damaged kerb and guttering, and improve connections to existing pedestrian infrastructure.
New ramp access structures and connecting pathways will also be delivered at the Museum of Education, Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Keeping Place and Gymnastics Club buildings, ensuring more people can safely and comfortably access these important community assets.
The project aligns with Council's strategic direction to improve active transport outcomes by addressing gaps in the pedestrian network and improving safety, accessibility and connectivity. The works are consistent with Council's Active Transport Strategy 2024, which identifies the provision of footpaths on Kentucky Street between Taylor Street and Dangar Street as a short-term priority to improve network connectivity and accessibility, particularly for people with disability, and to encourage walking as a sustainable transport choice.
The project also supports Council's Integrated Planning and Reporting framework and actions identified in Council's Operational Plan & Budget 2026-2027 as part of the Delivery Program, including outcomes under the connected region theme relating to the delivery of quality, safe and accessible transport infrastructure such as footpaths and kerb ramps.
The total project budget is $510,000 excluding GST, with $250,000 from Council's capital works budget and $260,000 from the FY2026/27 Active Transport Strategy budget.
The project will be delivered in two sections along Kentucky Street:
