Armidale Regional Council (ARC) is inviting community members to help shape the future of parks, reserves, and recreation facilities across the region through its upcoming Open Space and Recreation Strategy community consultation period.

As Armidale’s population grows, Council is committed to developing a long-term plan to guide the planning, acquisition, development, and management of public open spaces. These include parks, natural areas, sports and play facilities, and off-road trails. The strategy aims to ensure these spaces continue to meet the needs of residents over the next 15 years.

The strategy will align with local and state planning frameworks, support healthy and active lifestyles, and address challenges such as climate change and biodiversity. It will also explore ways to improve accessibility and ensure open spaces are inclusive and fit for purpose.

@leisure Planners will be conducting interviews with key informants, interest groups, and target population groups in the coming weeks. Site inspections and stakeholder workshops are also scheduled for early August.

“This is a vital opportunity for the community to have their say on the future of our outdoor spaces,” said Armidale Regional Council General Manager, James Roncon. “We want to know what facilities people value most, what improvements they’d like to see, and how we can better support a growing and diverse population.”

A draft strategy—complete with a vision, recommendations, and priorities—is expected to be submitted to Council in mid-way through 2026.

How to Get Involved:

Community members are encouraged to share their feedback through the Armidale Your Say page, where they can contribute detailed ideas and use the interactive map to pinpoint parks and facilities they visit—highlighting what they value most and where enhancements are needed in specific areas. Participants in our online Open Space and Recreation Strategy survey will also have a chance to win one of ten $200 gift vouchers to local sports retailers, and $1000 towards a local sporting club of their choice!
