Miniature Carousel Book Making

Carousel books have 5 panels like theatre stages, each containing in 3D a foreground, midground and background, which fold out when the book is fully opened.

Designing the contents needs some thought as participants decide on what the viewer is looking through or past to see the background and learning that “less is more” so that all the book’s stages are visible.

We will discuss how a story line or theme might be developed around the circumference of the opened book and how images interact through the depth of the book.

Images are applied with collage techniques and may be small drawings, prints, found images or fragments of the same.

Participants will be walked through the design principles and construction techniques needed to end the day with a finished construction ready to take home. To that end the scale of the book will be small.

Materials:

Liz will provide all materials necessary for the base construction including an initial template of book size, paper, double sided tape, scalpels and cutting mats, bone folders, fast drying craft glue, UHU glue sticks, heavy paper for covers, ribbons for closures.

Liz will also bring an assortment of small images for collage but participants may also like to bring some of their own. They need to be smaller than 10cm high to be usable.
