Awards recognise commitment to access and inclusion

Armidale Regional Council hosted a morning tea and award presentation as part of celebrations to mark International Day of People with Disability 2024.

Councilors, council staff, and members of Council's Access Advisory Committee gathered with the community outside the Civic Administration Building in Armidale for the event. 

The Armidale Regional Council Steve Austin Access Awards recognise those who are demonstrating extraordinary commitment and delivering exceptional benefit for locals living with disability. The community was invited to nominate individuals, businesses, and organisations for an award - to recognise effort that ensures we are living in a place that is accessible to everyone in our community.

After receiving a large number of impressive nominations, the Access Advisory Committee was pleased to be able to recommend the following awards which were presented by Mayor Sam Coupland:

  • Nannette JemmesonArmidale Regional Council Steve Austin Access Award for Individuals in recognition of extraordinary dedication to promoting inclusion and accessibility within the Armidale community. Nannette's tireless commitment to coaching a disability lawn bowls team every Friday afternoon, freely giving her time and expertise at no cost, demonstrates remarkable generosity and leadership. Nanette's efforts have provided an invaluable opportunity for individuals of all abilities to participate, connect, and thrive in an inclusive sporting environment.
  • headspace ArmidaleArmidale Regional Council Steve Austin Access Award for Organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to promoting accessibility and inclusion within the Armidale region. Through programs, services, and advocacy, headpsace Armidale has made a significant impact on improving access, enhancing independence, and empowering people to thrive in all aspects of life.
  • Armidale City Bowling Club - Armidale Regional Council Steve Austin Access Award for Business in recognition of outstanding commitment to accessibility and inclusion within the Armidale region. This business' dedication to ensuring physical access to their premises, freedom of movement within spaces, and fostering a supportive environment through exceptional staff attitude and assistance exemplifies the values of the Steve Austin Access Awards.

Certificates of appreciation were also presented to:
  • Aidacare Armidale in recognition of their great commitment to creating a highly accessible business and providing exceptional service to the Armidale community. Their accessible premises and the dedication of fantastic staff in offering helpful, compassionate assistance sets a benchmark for inclusivity and support.
  • Dave Matthews in recognition of his exceptional dedication as a wheelchair-accessible taxi driver. Dave's commitment to providing outstanding service, going above and beyond for his passengers, and educating fellow taxi drivers about accessibility reflects his passion for fostering inclusion and respect within our community.
  • Joe Landes in recognition of his exceptional service as a wheelchair-accessible taxi driver. Joe's dedication to going above and beyond to support your passengers with care, respect, and reliability exemplifies true community spirit.

Each of these people, businesses, and organisations are leading by example to create a community where everyone feels welcome and valued. They're making a lasting impact in our community.
