Water saving tips

With dry conditions continuing across the Armidale Region, small changes at home and in the garden can make a real difference to our local water supply.

Inside the Home

  • Fix leaks early. A dripping tap or leaking toilet can waste a surprising amount of water over time. If something doesn’t look right, it’s worth getting it checked.
  • Only run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads or use water‑saving settings for smaller loads.
  • Turn taps off when not needed, such as while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
  • Reuse water where practical, like using leftover water from rinsing vegetables on the garden.

In the Bathroom

  • Keep showers short, especially during warmer weather.
  • Avoid letting taps run unnecessarily, including when shaving or cleaning.
  • Consider water‑efficient fittings when upgrading bathrooms or replacing fixtures.

Gardens and Outdoor Areas

  • Water only during permitted times and avoid watering during the heat of the day, when most water is lost to evaporation.
  • Use a watering can or hose with a trigger nozzle to target plants that really need water.
  • Mulch garden beds to help keep moisture in the soil and protect plants during hot spells.
  • Choose hardy, drought‑tolerant or native plants that suit Armidale’s climate and soil.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways, paths and paved areas.

Lawns

  • Avoid over‑watering lawns. Let grass grow a little longer in summer to help shade the soil and reduce evaporation.
  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn where possible to help return moisture and nutrients to the soil.

Cars and Outdoor Cleaning

  • Wash vehicles on the lawn using a bucket or a hose with a trigger nozzle or use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
  • Avoid hosing down hard surfaces.

Rainwater and Greywater

  • Use rainwater and greywater wherever available, provided rainwater tanks are not topped up from town water.
  • Maintaining rainwater tanks and gutters helps make the most of any rainfall when it does arrive.

By being water‑wise now, the Armidale community can help protect local water supplies and reduce the need for tighter restrictions later.
