Old Courthouse Walkway plans approved

Armidale Regional Council (ARC) has approved concept plans for the upgrade of the Old Court House Walkway and Courtyard project that went on public display in December 2024.
The concept plans include re-establishing a critical pedestrian link from Central Mall to Moore Street, improving access to the mall.
Other upgrades to the area will include the incorporation of good landscape design and modern design elements, providing disabled access from the disabled parking spaces in Moore Street to Central Mall, converting the Old Sheriffs Quarters kitchen building for commercial use and multiple opportunities for public art.
A total of 143 submissions were received throughout the exhibition campaign which reflected substantial community interest in the project.
“More than 90 percent of submissions supported the concept plans which is an overwhelming positive response,” said ARC Mayor Sam Coupland.
“A grant application for $300,000 has been applied for under the NSW Governments ‘Caring for State Heritage Grant Scheme’ which if successful will go towards the work.
“The Old Court House precinct is an area of great public interest to the Armidale community and Council wants to make sure everybody is onboard with any upgrades to the area.
“The work will result in another fabulous area that people visiting the mall can spend quality time relaxing in and enjoying the historic surrounds of this precinct.”
Councillors endorsed the adoption of the final Old Court House Walkway and Courtyard Concept Plans at last week’s February Ordinary Council Meeting.
Council funds for the project will come from Section 7.12 Developer Contributions and no there will be no impact on general fund/rates.
