Stage 1 of the Master Plan involves the upgrade of the public space area behind the Monckton Aquatic Centre, bound by Dumaresq Street, Markham Street and Beardy Street. This area is known as the Active Family Precinct in the master plan. Stage 1 also includes the implementation of one exercise station at the adjacent Harris Park, and within the Creeklands precinct.
Stage 1 of the Master Plan is being funded with $3 million secured through the NSW Government.
The construction phase commenced on Monday, 18 August 2025, with a forecasted timeline of 20 weeks to completion. Works include:
- Weeding, revegetation, and bank stabilisation of Dumaresq Creek
- Picnic shelters
- Shared path with solar lighting
- Reconstruction of the Spanish arch wall
- Exercise station
- Interpretative signage and Aboriginal places signage
- New pedestrian crossing and entry to the area off Dumaresq Street
Council has completed significant stakeholder consultation to date to inform the development of the Armidale Creeklands Master Plan(PDF, 8MB) .
Background
The Dumaresq Creeklands have long been a focus of community and Council interest in Armidale. Following public advocacy and a coronial inquest into a drowning at Curtis Park, Armidale Regional Council engaged McGregor Coxall in 2018 to develop a Masterplan through research and consultation. The plan aims to reflect community needs, creating a safe, inclusive, and vibrant space that celebrates Armidale’s heritage and fosters connection across its neighbourhoods.
