Armidale Regional Council will deliver the final section of upgrade works along Bradley Street, between Mackenzie Street and Ollera Street, completing a project that has been anticipated by the community for several years.

The works will deliver significant improvements to the town centre, including:

• new footpaths
• new kerb and guttering
• new underground stormwater infrastructure
• new watermain infrastructure
• additional tree planting
• new underground conduits to support future street lighting and beautification projects.

Background

The Guyra Main Street upgrade project delivers on a promise made to the community following the amalgamation of Guyra Shire Council and Armidale Dumaresq Council in 2016. Original planning documents were shared during community consultation in 2017.

Work commenced on Bradley Street and was then suspended. The discovery of underground fuel tanks beneath sections of the footpath had caused delays and project cost increases. Significant time and funds were spent removing several tanks and completing necessary remediation works to the area. This was a major factor in why the Guyra Main Street upgrade project was not completed in its entirety at that time.

Council has undertaken extensive investigations, including ground-penetrating radar surveys and targeted drilling, to identify any additional underground fuel tanks within the project area. To date, there is no evidence to suggest additional underground fuel tanks exist.

Project timeline

• Opportunity for community to examine concept plans - October to December 2026
• Investigative works (potholing) - October 2026
• Construction commences - by mid-2027
• Project completeion - by end-2027

Potential impacts during construction

Work will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to local businesses and the community.

There will be some disruptions to parking and pedestrian access at some points in time along Bradley Street and intersecting streets during the construction period.

Council staff will be working alongside local businesses to minimise disruption as much as possible.
