Armidale Regional Council is undertaking a major reconstruction of Markham Street between Beardy Street and Rusden Street to renew ageing infrastructure and improve the safety, accessibility and long-term reliability of this important local road.

The existing road pavement has reached the end of its service life and can no longer be effectively maintained through routine repairs. The project will involve full pavement reconstruction, kerb and gutter repairs, footpath improvements and associated infrastructure works to deliver a safer and more durable street for residents, businesses and visitors.

Preparatory works are being completed ahead of the main construction phase to help streamline delivery of the project and reduce disruption during major works.

While construction is underway, residents and road users can expect temporary changes to traffic conditions, including road closures, detours, reduced parking availability and increased construction activity. Council will provide advance notice of any significant disruptions and will work to maintain access wherever possible.

As part of the project, some street trees will need to be removed due to their condition and impacts on existing infrastructure, pedestrian safety and future road works. Replacement planting will be undertaken to help restore canopy cover and maintain the character of the streetscape over time.

This page will be updated throughout the project to provide information on upcoming works, traffic impacts and project progress.
