The Ryanda street works near completion with the final AC seal surface applied. The works are expected to be completed over the next few weeks and reopened to normal traffic flow.
The new works received its first test with the recent short sharp storm with the the stormwater drainage performing to expectations.
Council greatly appreciates the co-operation and patience of the local residents to complete the upgrade work.

Works continue to progress well, despite some challenges on site.
Due to a subcontractor scheduling conflict, the sequence of works has been adjusted, resulting in some additional time being added to the project. Final sealing of the roadway is now scheduled for the week commencing 11 May. To help limit additional costs, some tasks have been reordered, including bringing forward pavement excavation ahead of the final kerb and gutter installation. Certain activities, such as concrete curing times, cannot be shortened to ensure the long-term performance of the finished assets.
Council will continue to look for opportunities to recover lost time and will progressively reduce the size of the crew and plant on site as works are completed to help manage costs.
Ongoing dry conditions may impact final grass restoration. Some return works may be required in spring to fully re-establish grassed areas, and the site will continue to be monitored until restoration is complete.
Council has been sourcing non-potable water for construction activities, including water from water treatment plant backwash ponds in Armidale and Guyra, and more recently from the Guyra Pool following the end of the swimming season. This approach avoids the use of drinking water and minimises impacts on natural waterways, particularly in light of current and potential future water restrictions.

Works on Ryanda Street are progressing well, with dry weather allowing strong progress over recent weeks. The old asbestos cement watermain has been safely removed, enabling road pavement works and subgrade stabilisation between Ollera Street and Dutton Parade, with the first pavement layer now installed.
Most of the main stormwater line is complete, with only one road crossing, pit completion and final restoration remaining. Installation of the new stormwater system will reduce reliance on table drains, and damaged driveway culverts will be replaced with concrete dishes to maintain property access. New kerb and gutter will be installed on the western side of Ryanda Street from Tenterden Street through to Lackey Street and Urandangie Street as works progress.
What’s coming up
- The top layer of road pavement between Ollera Street and Dutton Parade will be completed by the end of the week.
- Local access will be maintained, with short interruptions for driveway construction and final road sealing. Residents will be notified in advance.
- Upcoming works include:
- Subsoil drainage installation to protect the road pavement
- Pavement preparation and kerb and gutter pours
- Completion of stormwater pits and final stormwater works
- Construction of the shared path near the tennis courts and soccer field
- Road pavement construction from Dutton to the end of works
No works will occur during the week of 6 April due to the public holiday and rostered days off. Works will resume on 13 April, focusing on the section of Ryanda Street from Dutton to Tenterden.
Traffic between Ollera and Tenterden will remain local access only, with fewer road closures south of Tenterden and a gradual return to more normal traffic conditions.

Works on Ryanda Street have continued to progress well over March, and we thank residents and road users for their patience during construction.
Stormwater pipeline installation has now been completed between Ollera Street and Tenterden Street, with remaining pit works to be finalised shortly. The stormwater crew has returned to the lower section of Ryanda Street and is working toward completion in the coming weeks, followed by final tidy‑up works along the trench line.
Preparation for new kerb and gutter installation is underway, and pavement works for the new parking area in front of the playing fields have been completed. The concrete shared path alongside the tennis courts will need to be removed and reconstructed due to cracking that does not meet required standards. Council is working with suppliers and contractors to address this issue.
What’s coming up
Construction of new kerb and gutter will commence between Ollera Street and Dutton Parade, with works occurring on both sides of the road. Removal of the old asbestos watermain will also take place and will be carried out with strict safety controls in place.
Road pavement works between Ollera Street and Dutton Parade will follow later in the month.
During this period, residents within this section of Ryanda Street will not have vehicle access to their properties and on‑street parking will not be available. Pedestrian access to properties will be maintained via footpaths. No through‑traffic will be permitted between Ollera Street and Dutton Parade while works are underway.

Works along Ryanda Street continue to progress steadily. Although the roadwork component between Ollera and Tenterden Streets experienced a delayed start, this section is now underway and crews are working to recover lost time. Stormwater drainage installation has progressed to mid‑block between Urandangie and Lackey Street; however, delivery of the remaining 600mm pipe needed to reach Tenterden Street has been delayed. Crews will install the remaining available pipe before shifting to the section between Tenterden and Ollera Streets to complete the smaller stormwater runs.
Residents may notice white paint marks along the eastern kerb from Tenterden to Manse Streets. These indicate areas where lifted kerb sections will be replaced, along with associated pavement repairs.
We acknowledge community concerns regarding the timing of works around the Guyra Show (20–22 February). To minimise impacts, no work will occur on Thursday 19 February or Friday 20 February, and two‑way traffic will be temporarily reinstated with work areas condensed as much as possible.
With school returning, traffic volumes have increased. Bus routes have been diverted in consultation with bus operators, and we ask all road users to follow reduced speed limits and traffic controls for safety. Property owners will be contacted directly where access is affected.
Upcoming Works
- Stormwater crews will complete remaining pipe installation between Urandangie and Lackey Streets, then move to Tenterden–Ollera Street to install smaller lines. They will return to continue the main trench once the delayed 600mm pipe arrives.
- Pit crews will continue constructing stormwater pits to finalise works south of Lackey Street.
- Road crews have begun the shared path near the tennis courts, aiming to pour the first 80m this week, and will continue subsoil drainage and pavement works near the soccer field. The first kerb sections on the eastern side are expected to be poured next week.
The area between Tenterden and Ollera Streets will be particularly busy over the next few weeks. A southbound lane will remain open where safe to do so, but we encourage drivers to use alternative routes where possible.
