The Armidale region community came together on Sunday 1 March 2026 to take part in Clean Up Australia Day, with volunteers of all ages helping to remove litter and care for local parks and waterways across the city.
Supported by Armidale Regional Council, community members, schools and local groups worked together at multiple locations including Curtis Park, Civic Park, Harris Park, the Armidale Bicentennial Arboretum, Drummond Apex Lookout, and surrounding creeklands, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting the local environment.
Mayor Sam Coupland praised the strong community spirit shown on the day.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a wonderful example of our community coming together for a common purpose,” Mayor Coupland said. “It’s encouraging to see residents, students and community groups taking pride in their local environment and helping to care for our parks, lookouts and waterways for future generations.”
Participants collected litter from public open spaces and waterways, helping to improve environmental health while also raising awareness about waste reduction and sustainability.
Council staff from the Engagement Parks and Waste teams supported the event, ensuring volunteers were able to participate safely and effectively. Community groups including The Armidale School, Armidale Urban Rivercare Group, Ascent, Laing and Simmons, Martin’s Gully Public School, UNE, Zonta and local residents contributed their time and effort to make the day a success.
Mayor Coupland thanked everyone involved.
“Every piece of litter removed makes a difference,” he said. “Council is proud to support Clean Up Australia Day and to work alongside our community to keep Armidale clean, healthy and beautiful.”
Clean Up Australia Day is a national initiative encouraging Australians to take practical action to protect the environment. Armidale Regional Council thanks all volunteers, community groups, schools and staff who participated in Clean Up Australia Day 2026.
