The Armidale Folk Museum holds the wedding dress of Sophia Ruth Howe, who married Reuben Roan in Armidale in February, 1884.
Former Folk Museum curator and dress historian Bronwyn Clarke uses historical reconstruction as a research method to uncover the lives of people in the past, particularly women. She has researched this dress extensively, including creating a replica of it using the original 1880s techniques. She’ll take you ‘behind the seams’ of the dress and the re-creation process, and share her discoveries about Sophia and the Armidale dressmakers of the early 1880s.
